Recycling Process

Everyone knows that recycling is a good thing for the environment, and it is something that we should all do. But have you ever actually wondered what happens to all the bottles, cans and newspapers that are collected? According to the EPA there is a three step process, or loop, that occurs in the recycling of a product and this process helps the materials that would otherwise become waste become resources that can be used in other ways.

The first step is the collection and processing. The way that your recyclables are picked up is different in different areas, but there are four standard methods. These methods are curbside pickup, drop-off center, buy-back centers, and deposit/refund programs. Once these materials are collected they are then cleaned and sorted. Once this step is completed the materials are ready to enter the second step, which is manufacturing.

Many products that are manufactured today are made using recycled materials. There are many items in your house right now that were made using recycled material, such as paper towels, or your laundry detergent bottle. These recycled materials are also used in many different creative ways, such as to help with roadway construction by using glassphalt.

The final step in the process is the purchasing of the recycled products. This may be the most important step in the process, because as people continue to purchase recycled products the demand will continue to go up and that will just drive up the manufacturing of recycled products.

Recycling is not only good for the environment but it reduces the use of landfills, prevents pollution, cuts down on greenhouse gases, and helps maintain our world for the future. So, continue to recycle so you can keep this three-step process going.
