Drug Rehab in Maryland

Drug rehabilitation facilities in Maryland are very busy these days, but maybe aren’t as busy as they should be. Doctors feel like there are many more people that need to be admitted into rehabs but aren’t. Drug addiction in Maryland comes in all shapes and sizes. It affects both adolescents and senior citizens, and can be caused by a variety of drugs which include cocaine, marijuana and heroin. Tens of thousands addicts are admitted into Maryland drug or alcohol rehab every year. Heroin is the most common illicit drug cited by Marylanders who enter drug rehab. Marijuana and various prescription drugs are the mostly widely abused throughout the state, but addicts don’t seek help because people feel like they are minor drugs that can’t cause any damage. Those people are sadly wrong and it is a fact that prison cells and hospital beds are occupied by addicts who were either arrested or injured while under the influence. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration also states that cocaine and crack cocaine are a primary drug threat along with those other drugs.

The Treatment Solution Network says that Baltimore is dealing with a war against heroin. According to USA Today, in 2003 71 percent of the 24,700 Baltimore residents who sought substance abuse rehab said they abused heroin. State officials and Baltimore city leaders have taking various actions to fight against heroin. The city spent $250,000 to train local primary care doctors on how to prescribe buprenorphine, which is a prescription drug used to treat addiction of heroin and other drugs like OxyContin. Drug rehab facilities are located in or near the state’s largest cities. This includes Baltimore, Fredrick, Gaithersburg, Rockville, Bowie, Hagerstown, Annapolis, Salisbury, College Park, and Greenbelt. These facilities save a lot of lives in Maryland, but there might not be any statistic to demonstrate that, only lives lost not coming to them.
