FSU has made significant steps towards going green. Between the upcoming SERF, our windmill, making buildings energy efficient, and adding recycling to campus buildings and residential halls, Frostburg has greatly decreased their ecological footprint.
However, there is one aspect of going green that FSU has overlooked: off campus students. 48% of students live on campus, which means 52% live off campus. Since the city of Frostburg does not provide curbside recycling pick-up, off-campus students are likely to throw away recyclable items such as beer cans, plastic bottles, and paper.
Bringing recyclables to the bins in campus buildings is sometimes not worth the effort because they are relatively small and cannot contain a whole household’s worth of recyclable items. As a solution, FSU should offer large recycling bins, such as the ones that are found at the dump, for students to drop off bags of bottles, cans, etc.
These bins could be placed under the library, near the loading dock, as they would not be an eye sore and they would be off the beaten path so the trucks that empty them would not block the traffic flow. Williams College in Massachusetts has taken recycling very seriously and have large bins on their campus.
