How to Deal with Homesickness

After thanksgiving break it is always difficult transition to get back into the routine of classes, homework, and exams. Then, the feeling of homesickness seems to rear its ugly head. So, now you find yourself unmotivated, lazy, and sad and all around frustrated. Trying to deal with being homesick is complicated because mentally you think nothing will help you feel better but in reality there are.

  1. Remember that these feelings of being homesick are completely normal. Almost everyone gets homesick eventually throughout the semester. Don’t feel alone.
  2. Stay focused. The semester is almost over, so do not let the sadness rear you off the track of doing well this semester.
  3. Do not lock yourself up in your room. Go out and be social. It will keep your mind off of being sad about not being home.
  4. Stay productive. When you keep yourself busy time goes by a lot faster.
  5. Don’t drink your sorrows in alcohol, binge eating, or do other destructive behaviors because it will just enhance your emotions to a whole another extreme.
  6. Talk to somebody. Don’t hold all those emotions in. You’ll feel better once you get it off your chest.
  7. Go for a run or work out. Not only will it help clear your mind but you’ll kick in your endorphins which will make you happy.
  8. Don’t go home every chance you get. You have to get used to be away and going home often just makes you even more homesick.
Just know that you are not alone. And that you have what it takes to make it through the rest of the semester. Hopefully, these tips will help you. Don’t worry it will be over and you’ll be home soon.
Good Luck!
