Tonight at the Student Government Association meeting one of
the topics discussed was the progress of the smoking ban at Frostburg State
University. A slide show presentation of the progress and future plans was
announced by April Baer of the Brady Health Center. After the presentation, concerns of both
smokers and non-smokers were addressed.
One of the biggest concerns addressed among attendees was
the apparent lack of enforcement against smokers. Although the ban has been made into policy,
there are plenty of student senators that don’t think that the campus police
have been imposing the regulations. April Baer says that the main goal was not
to over burden the people in charge with keeping students safe by putting on
the obligation of issuing citations for minor infractions.
The smokers had asked about designated smoking areas, but
Mrs. Baer considered this taking “a step back.” The primary concern is that the
school has focused so much on a Smoke-Free condition, that allowing smoking
anywhere on the campus would be an act of hypocrisy. As of now, the focus will remain on removing
smoking, and eventually all forms of tobacco at FSU.
As of now, if you are looking for a place to smoke, you’re
going to have to go 25 feet outside of the Frostburg Campus. Whether you agree
with it or not, this is the policy that is taking place right now. Though it
shouldn’t be too major of a conflict, since only about 4% of FSU students are
smokers anyway. For now, the other 96% of students will just have to avoid them
at all cost.
