FSU Sociology Department Offers Sexuality-Based Classes

By: Neil Ralph

A few weeks from now, FSU students will be signing up for spring classes. What are some good classes to take?  Sociology 366 deals with “Social Inequalities”, the social construction of gender inequalities. Sociology 364 is “Marriage and Family Relationships” talks about courtship and alternatives to marriage and the like. Last, but not least “Introduction to Women’s Studies” covers women’s issues dealing with things such as sexual orientation. I spoke with Sociology professor Dr. Julie Hartman about these classes. “I try to incorporate that gender is not binary” Hartman said. “Some students find it hard to get that you can’t always look at someone to determine what gender they are based on their sexual presentation. We also talk about same-sex marriage as well as the election ballot and hate crimes: the good and the bad that tie in there.” So why should students take these classes? “It gives heterosexual students a deeper sense of the world and reality and for LGBT students, it’s a place to see themselves and their issues in the curriculum as well as in a classroom setting,” Hartman says.  Therefore, why not receive class credit by taking classes that promote diversity?
