I talked to a few people who live off campus and
they gave me some ways to keep a happy roommate.
1. Cleanliness-
no one should be forced to live in clutter.
If you’re the type of person who absolutely MUST live a cluttered
lifestyle, keep it in your own room and close the door! This will keep your roommate(s) happy and out
of your hair.
2. Bills-
when you sign that contract you are agreeing to pay half of the bills. When the time comes there should be no fuss
about who owes what. This is an equal
agreement.
3. Ask
First- before borrowing any items from your roommate’s personal belongings, you
should always get permission. Taking
without asking is stealing and if that happens he/she will not be able to trust
you. When given the permission to borrow
the item, always take good care of it and return it as soon as possible because
if you damage it or hold on to it for too long, your roommate will never let
you borrow anything else.
4. Be
Mindful- as college students, we are constantly studying. Whenever your roommate has his/her head in
the books try to keep it down. Also when
he/she is trying to sleep or just doesn’t want to hear your noise, be
respectful.
5. Communication
is key- disagreements should never turn into silence or a physical altercation. As college students we are all adults who
should be able to settle arguments by simply talking it out.
