The beginning of tonight’s Student Government meeting
tonight focused on the upcoming Homecoming events such as the Pep Rally and
Dance. A reminder to students who intend to be at the game: please wear all
black. Any student who would like to help with preparing for the Pep rally,
please contact Student Government President Jerica Bennett by this Sunday.
The Student Government then proceeded to vote on three
requests for funding by three separate student clubs. The first was a request
by the College Entrepreneurs Organization to attend a national event that
provides information and advice to Entrepreneurs. This motion was the only
motion to not pass unanimously. The second request was made by the Marketing
Club to attend an even that would allow up to 13 students to spend a weekend
speaking with employees of a marketing firm in order to gain real world
experience. The final request, made by the International Relations Club, was to
attend a Model United Nations conference in Philadelphia. All requests for the
maximum amount the Student Government could allot $1,100.18 per request.
A point of interest raised by Senator Bauer of the Student
Government at the end of the meeting tonight expanded beyond student safety,
and into a public concern for all residents of Frostburg. He is an off campus rental student in Frostburg, MD, where fire extinguishers need only be present in the property but no
inspection is required. Senator Bauer said the issue should be on the minds of
the Student Government, and reminded all of the two students who were killed in a fire last year.
Fire safety is not just a Frostburg problem. Cumberland has
had several fires over the years, this year alone resulting in the tragicdeaths of two children.
