Support Fuzzy Friends in Need.

By Racheal Myers
Animal shelters are necessary organizations for communities to possess: they help manage the pet population by spaying or neutering; they take in unwanted animals that would otherwise be left in hazardous situations; they help match animals with loving “forever homes.” Many of these establishments are non-profit, meaning they rely on donations to support the animals that are waiting for homes.

The Allegany County Animal Shelter in Allegany County Maryland is one of these non-profit shelters that need the help of the community to support its homeless pet population. To supplement the donations it receives, the shelter holds many fundraising events throughout the year. The following is a list of all the events that are being held in the month of October:

The 1st Annual Masquerade Ball is being held October 20th, 2012 from 6pm until 11pm at the Holiday Inn in Cumberland, MD. There will be light Hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar, and music from DJ Mayhem. There is a discount on hotel accommodations at the Holiday Inn (event location) for $99 if you mention the Masquerade. If you come with another couple or some friends, you can split the room. It is going to be an awesome time! The Cumberland Keep, a costume store located at 414 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland will give a 10% discount on the total purchase price, which includes sales as well as rentals, if you show your ticket to them.
Come out and join the fun this month, or keep an eye on future events by viewing the Allegany County Animal Shelters Facebook page or website, at http://ashelterofhope.com/events.html. If you can’t donate money, please consider donating to the shelter in other ways. Volunteers are always needed to do an array of different jobs, including handling animals at adoption events. The shelter also accepts donations of old towels or blankets, and hay bales to provide bedding for the fuzzy friends waiting for a second chance. The best way to help shelters in need? Become a foster, or adopt from the shelter to reduce the strain of finding space for more needy animals.
