World Mental Health Day

WHO | World Health Organization
Today, October 10th is World Mental Heath Day. The goal is to promote awareness of mental health issues and the theme this year is "investing in mental health."

The World Health Organization estimates that 1 in 4 people will be affected by mental illness at some point in their lives. At Frostburg, that equates to almost 1200 undergraduate students on campus. Every 40 seconds, someone commits suicide. In a 50 minute class with an average size of 18 students, everyone in you class would have committed suicide within 12 minutes.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, 30% of college-age students reported feeling depressed. 49% reported overwhelming anxiety. 10% reported being diagnosed or treated for mental illness (primarily depression). 6% reported seriously considering suicide.

Check out the link to NY Times and some reasons behind why college students, especially freshmen, face the challenges they do.
