On Wednesday, October 12, the Frostburg State Volleyball team had a home match against division opponent Mary Washington. This was a special game too, as the volleyball team was promoting the fight against breast cancer with their motto “dig pink.” The whole team wore their special pink jerseys and had a banner in the bleachers that read “Fight 4 the Cure.” They also had a table set up before you enter the gymnasium with the opportunity for anybody to donate to the cause, or purchase a pink wrist band for two dollars that would support the fight against breast cancer.
The atmosphere was very alive too. People throughout the crowd wore pink shirts, shorts, hair-ties, wrist bands, and other accessories to show their support of the cause and for the team. The bleachers were also filled because it was the volleyball teams “flood” game. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which is made up of select members from each athletic team, have just recently started these flood games. The purpose of the flood games is to try and pack the entire stadium or gym with as many members of the other athletic teams as possible. So each team will pick a game that they want to deem their “flood” game, and will notify all the rest of the teams so that they can come and support them. This was the first flood game of the semester, and overall I would say it was a success. There were members from every athletic team represented in the crowd, even though there could have been even more from each team.
The game itself, however, was a success as well. The Bobcats lost the first game of the match, but stormed back to win three consecutive games to win the match. They showed great resolve and leadership to fight back after going down one game, and proved they can play with anybody. They are now 4-1 in conference play and have 5 matches left before the Capital Athletic Conference tournament begins.
Josh, how many people were present in the stands, and how much money was raised?
